When I became a homeowner years ago, the lot on which my modest home rests beckoned for some major TLC. I saw enormous creative potential but it was overgrown with weeds, crabgrass, indiscriminate plantings, and far too many shrubs and trees. Much of the first year was spent clearing clutter in order to create a fresh canvas. As space was cleared and some trees were removed, distinct areas began to take shape and develop character. I created a series of outdoor “rooms” through which one could meander on recycled brick and flagstone paths. To entice the local birds, a birdbath, birdhouse, and assorted feeders are strewn throughout. My garden will always be a work in progress, with newly discovered plants and ideas to inspire me.
